Warhawk Riders
This unit won a Gold Demon at the Oz GD. The base size restrictions meant they only just fit - obviously 15x30cm is lots of space for a rank-and-file unit, not so much for large skirmisher types. The base is, however, apparently too high to be legal - there was something in the *main* rules (rather than the category rules, which listed all other base restrictions) about a base only being twice the height of the standard base. Which would have made this what, 4mm? Or would it be more like 60 because of the flying rods? As it is it's just under 40mm. D'oh. Oh well, I'll know for next year. Argh.
The unit was commissioned for the GD so already has a home. And paid for some of my trip over, which was nice. I'm hoping to do that again next year. The rocks are made of blue foam, coated with DAS modelling clay for texture, with the spiral patterns inscribed on them as they were drying. They have fishing sinkers inside them for weight. There are some small conversions on the models - the three bowmen had strings added and some minor repositioning and resculpting (eg a couple of hands), one had a harp attached to his leg. The spearmen now holds the really big spear from the dragon rider, and holds the standard as a kind of shield. The champion's hawk has a hood with gems and patterns, and his shield is also from the dragon rider model. Woodgrain, spiral patterns and tattoos feature on these models, as well as some patterning on the dark green fabric. The skintones are all slightly different although all are pale and reasonably high-contrast. You can see in the first picture that the little rock on the display base is damaged - that's what plane travel can do to ya. I'm also going to redo the way the champion attaches to his rock as it probably wouldn't be stable long term.
